School holidays have a way of sneaking up on you. One minute you're planning ahead, the next the kids are already at the back door in their bathers asking if they can jump in. It's one of the best things about having a pool, honestly. But here's the thing most families don't think about until it's too late: a pool that's been sitting quietly through the cooler months isn't necessarily a pool that's ready for a full house of kids. Water chemistry drifts. Filters get lazy. And gates that seemed fine last summer might not be up to scratch right now.

The good news is that getting your pool holiday-ready doesn't have to be a drama. A bit of attention now saves a lot of headaches later, whether that's green water on day one of the holidays, itchy eyes and skin on the kids, or worse, a safety issue you didn't see coming. The most important things to check are your water balance, the cleanliness and clarity of the water itself, and the condition of your fencing and gates. Get those three things right and you're in a genuinely good position.

We have had Ryan, Mick and their team working hard to finish our pool before Xmas. I highly recommend them...

Adam from Coastline helped us with our new pool. Great service #!$ advice. Pool was planned, approved and built before my friends was even approved.

I have been using Coastline Pools for about 5 years now, probably 2 years after I put my pool in. Then, being new to what to do to maintain my pool the Coastline staff at Raymond Terrace have been fantastic.

Colin Butters

Coastline have been very prompt with ongoing regular pool maintenance and especially when we needed new equipment. We get a text before each maintenance visit which helps me to remember they are coming.

Tricia Pannell

Coastline service our commercial pool on a regular basis. I would not trust it with anyone else. From the helpful ladies in the shop to the technicians, they are very professional in everything they do.

Let's start with water balance, because this is the one that catches people out the most. Balanced water isn't just about keeping the pool looking nice and clear. It's about keeping it safe for everyone who swims in it. When your pH, alkalinity, and sanitiser levels are off, you end up with water that can irritate eyes and skin, damage your pool surfaces and equipment over time, and fail to actually do the job of keeping bacteria and algae in check. The sweet spot for pH sits between 7.2 and 7.6. Chlorine needs to be working at the right level to sanitise effectively, and that only happens when the other numbers are in range. Calcium hardness, stabiliser, and total dissolved solids all play a part too. It sounds like a lot, but a proper water test takes the guesswork out of all of it. Bring a sample of your pool water in to us and we'll test it on the spot, for free, and tell you exactly what it needs. No guessing, no buying products you don't actually require.

Clean, clear water goes hand in hand with balanced water, but they're not exactly the same thing. You can have water that looks clear but is still harbouring bacteria if the chemistry is off. And you can have water that's chemically balanced but cloudy from a filter that's not coping. Before the holidays ramp up, give your filter a good backwash or clean depending on the type you have. Check that your pump is running for long enough each day to turn the water over properly. In the warmer months and with more swimmers in the pool, you'll likely need to run it longer than you did through winter. Skim the surface regularly, vacuum the floor if needed, and keep an eye on the walls and steps for any early signs of algae. Catching it early is always easier and cheaper than dealing with a full green pool.

Now, the one that matters more than anything else: pool fencing and gate safety. In New South Wales, pool fencing laws exist for a reason, and they are not optional. Every swimming pool and spa on a residential property must be surrounded by a child-resistant barrier, and that barrier has to meet specific requirements. Gates must be self-closing and self-latching, with the latch positioned so young children cannot reach it. The fence itself must be in good condition, free from gaps, damage, or anything that could be used as a foothold to climb over. If your pool has a certifier's inspection coming up, get ahead of it. But even if you're not due for a check, do your own walk around the fence line before the holidays are in full swing. Look at it with fresh eyes. Check every latch, every hinge, every panel. It takes ten minutes and it genuinely matters. If anything looks questionable, get it sorted before the kids are out there every day. This is the non-negotiable one.
